This shirt was thrifted but it's very new I think-it's by Alice + Olivia.
Kinda feel like Stevie Nicks with my big hair and big sleeves in this photo…
I was googling her and came across this page, and it has a few of quotes from her about her style-funny read.
Skirt from Anthropologie.
Belt from my mom's old store.
Miu Miu dragonfly pumps
Multi charm necklace from Urban Outfitters.

MUSE: Masami Tsuchiya
-member of Japanese New Wave band Ippu-Do
-released solo album 'Rice Music' in 1982 (great album, Ryuichi Sakamoto plays on the song Kafka…it's hard to find, but well worth the search…WHAT A FANTASTIC ALBUM COVER!)
-tour guitarist for Japan
-a stylish guy, a striking face
(Images from Japan's website)

AMERICAN DESIGN ICON: Tony Duquette
-set designer, jewelry designer, costume designer, artist, and interior decorator
''Decorating is not a surface performance,'' Mr. Duquette once said, ''It's a spiritual impulse, inborn and primordial.''
(taken from his obituary in the NY Times)
(pictures from his website)

NO ONE SO PERFECT AS: Tina Chow
(1950-1992)
-model, jewelry designer, and friend to many.
This is a good excerpt about her style from her Wiki entry:
"An Asian-American, Chow represented the new diversity and universalism of modern beauty, but her fashion intelligence was even greater than her beauty. One of the most important collectors of couture clothing, Chow's practised eye is still regarded as the paradigm of collecting and connoisseurship. Chow knew the great designers of her time, but demonstrated her interest in the past by choosing works of Madeleine Vionnet, Cristobal Balenciaga and Christian Dior for her astute collection. Her initial collecting interest was Mariano Fortuny, whose 'Delphos' dresses, capes and mantles were a syncretist interpretation of East and West"
I have an issue of British Vogue from 1984 that has an excellent feature on her style, and I will be scanning that to post on Sea of Shoes this week.

HAPPY NEW YEARS EVERYBODY//it’s 2009!!!!!!!

Fashion
Jan 1, 2009113 Comments

The pants I am wearing are a recent eBay purchase, I can't stop wearing them since they've arrived. Also, I am wearing my new basket weave Givenchys, and holy moly, they are by FAR the most painful shoes I own. I wore them to go shopping and they totally lacerated my feet-oh well, better suck it up! I'm in love with these gorgeous shoes.
2008 was great! I'm sad to say goodbye.
But the new year looks bright! The future holds exciting things!!
What were you dancing to last night?
I can't get enough of this song!
(Raquel is such a babe.)
HAPPY NEW YEARS, EVERYBODY!
Thanks to everybody who takes time to read Sea of Shoes and thank you to the people who write me such sweet Facebook messages and emails-you guys have made my year really amazing and I hope all of your new years are filled with wonderful things :)

A NEW PIECE OF VINTAGE KANSAI FOR THE ARCHIVE//”the aviator skirt”

Fashion
Dec 29, 200846 Comments

This is one of the things that arrived in the mail this week from eBay, and I have been seriously excited about this vintage Kansai Yamamoto skirt. My mom and I are both avid collectors of Kansai Yamamoto and when we saw this skirt on eBay, we had to have it!

It's not something that I would want because I wanted to wear it all of the time, but more because it's typical of Kansai Yamamoto!

It's just one big square of knit fabric that has been tye-dyed and screen printed and has a hole in it for the waist.

^Here you can see the bizarre 'Kansai Plane' design. It also has a pocket.

Obviously this aviator skirt is the perfect match for my Junya Watanabe flight jacket from Fall 06.

I never mentioned, that when I was in Philadelphia I got to visit Kansai Yamamoto's exposition at the Philadelphia Museum of Art. It was really cool, they had a video of his runway shows from 1971-1973 and they were amazing! Incredibly theatrical. I think you can watch them on Youtube (search Kansai Yamamoto) if you are so inclined!

I won't bombard you with tons of pictures of the exhibit but here are some of my favorites:

I have another eBay find to share! I'll try to post it tomorrow.

ALL TIME IDOLS//elusive perfection

This photo from Jak & Jil perfectly captures one of those rare moments where someone briefly enters your line of vision out of nowhere and their look is so completely beyond this world that that one image you have of them in your memory stays with you forever.
I can only think of a couple of times this has happened to me, where I have seen someone that looks so damn cool, that I uphold them in my mind eternally as a superhuman style icon.
Imagine how bad-ass this chick must have looked at Paris Fashion Week, amidst the Balmain divas and the Balenciaga girls….it's kind of like she showed up there in her see-through lace granny dress, old jeans, and work boots was just like, "F*ck you, fashion!"
All that being said, does anyone know who this fleeting vision in lace actually is?

WHAT I WORE YESTERDAY//some new X-MAS/BIRTHDAY presents

Fashion
Dec 26, 200885 Comments

**I am bursting with Christmas cheer as you can tell from this photograph!**
This is what I wore to our Christmas gatherings yesterday.
I am really excited about the new Prada bag my mom got me for my birthday!

To be honest, at first I didn't know if I liked it.
But I thought about it some more and decided it was actually really, really cool. It's leather patches made it look like a dinosaur and the double zipper even sort of resemble the teeth of a T. Rex. It's actually a really wierd bag-definitely not the typical purse you'd expect from Prada.
The prehistoric Prada bag??
It's just the sort of bag for a non-bag girl like me. Thanks, Mom.
I am also wearing a shearling and suede jacket by Richard Chai. It is a very inky black that is a little bit green. You can actually do a lot of different things with the collar and various zips and snaps but I like it best this way. Definitely one of the best birthday buys ever!
(* Some very exciting things just arrived in the mail from eBay this weekend and I can't wait to blog them-hopefully I can do all that this weekend!*)
Hope you had wonderful Christmases yesterday :)

I did a little imaginary Christmas shopping in my head.

ANOTHER ANN DEMEULEMEESTER BOOT/SANDAL SIGHTING
* yes I stalk these shoes *

On an unrelated note:
Today I am wearing my chrome wedge Marni peeptoe booties from Fall 2007.
Definitely some of the best shoes of that season.

And thank you very much to the people who sent me such nice birthday wishes yesterday! :)
Merry Christmas everybody!
