The Colors and Textures to Stock Up On This Spring-and how to wear them

The Colors and Textures to Stock Up On This Spring-and how to wear them

I have noticed there has been a huge movement in fashion lately towards softer colors and fabrics, lots of pastel hues in silk and satin and chiffon. I am really happy to see this shift towards a more romantic sense of design. It feels like a great relief after years of everyone trying to emulate Phoebe Philo’s minimalism and restraint (not that I don’t love that too).  I’ve been looking for My Little Pony shades of lilac, buttercup yellow, sherbert, and pink and finding a lot of great pieces that make for fantastic color combinations. I consider all of these colors huge mood elevators too. It’s hard to be grumpy when you are wearing blue angora and a dress in canary yellow silk! Below are some of my favorite pieces I have found and some of the ways I am wearing them lately.

Here are some shopping ideas for soft pastel pieces to incorporate into your wardrobe this spring:

15 Best Shoes Now

15 Best Shoes Now

I have been thinking a lot about shoes lately. I’ve mentioned this in a few posts this year, but I just have been feeling really picky about new footwear. Shoe design has felt somewhat stagnant over the last few years and I do believe we’re finally seeing some more exciting shoe offerings. I love the strappy minimal heels we’ve been seeing as they are flattering on the foot and versatile for styling. It is nice to have a pretty, simple shoe that won’t compete with the rest of your outfit. I also have been feeling the chunky, mannish platform boots and sneakers that have been so popular the last few seasons. I enjoy a chunky monster boot so much and I love seeing other people wearing them. Here are some of my top picks for shoes that feel right, right now.

Fashion in Film: Soapdish (1991)

Fashion in Film: Soapdish (1991)

Over the weekend, I had the immense pleasure of watching Soapdish (1991)  for the first time, directed by Michael Hoffman and starring Sally Field, Whoopi Goldberg, Carrie Fisher, Kevin Kline, Robert Downey Jr, Elizabeth Shue and Cathy Moriarty. What a cast! I knew I was in for a treat when I saw Nolan Miller of Dynasty fame had done the costume design. I am still dying over the fantastic Memphis inspired set design and I am keeping my eyes peeled for anything cow print right now.

It’s a spoof on the backstabbing and drama that goes on behind the scenes for daytime soap opera stars. Carrie Fisher gives a brief and brilliant performance as a lecherous casting agent, Sally Field as the long suffering star of a top soap opera, Kevin Kline as her seedy ex boyfriend, and Elizabeth Shue as an ambitious star on the rise. As much fun as this movie was, I spent the whole time pausing it to take in the splendor of the set design and costumes. Tacky perfection! Some of my favorite set design I’ve ever seen. Don’t miss this one if you haven’t seen it. Make a pitcher of tiki drinks and enjoy.

You can rent it on Prime Video here!

How I Bullet Journal: A Simple Approach

How I Bullet Journal: A Simple Approach

I have wanted to do a post about bullet journaling for months but I have had to hold off until I found a system for my journaling that I was happy with. In case you are wondering what bullet journaling even is, it’s journaling system designed to “to help you track the past, organize the present, and plan for the future” (as described by it’s creator Ryder Carrol). A quick scan of the #bujo (shorthand for bullet journal) hashtag on instagram will yield a plethora of meticulously hand drawn weekly planners and other organizing method. Some people get very creative with adding artwork, or creating elaborate sleep trackers. I have a more parred down approach to bullet journaling that works for me!

Belt Bags as the Ultimate Style Upgrade

Belt Bags as the Ultimate Style Upgrade

I caved into a “trend” piece this season, but only because I think the belt bag is an item that is on its way to being more than just a flash in the pan. I feel like fashion is at a really transitional point right now as we enter the 2020’s and I have been thinking a lot about what looks fresh right now, and what feels bad. As someone whose wardrobe is predominantly vintage, I have to think hard about how to keep my wardrobe looking modern. As someone who spends all day every day immersed in fashion, I have to think about why so much of it leaves me feeling uninspired.

The New Basics: Style Staples That Look Fresh Now

The New Basics: Style Staples That Look Fresh Now

Click on the items to shop the looks!

Every few years it’s good to reassess the necessities of your wardrobe, and I think fashion has reached that point where it’s important to think about what looks relevant and is easy to wear right now. I’ve been looking at my own wardrobe as well as some fashion inspiration from the runways and I have come to some conclusions about what the new fashion basics are.

1. Beige Blazer

Oatmeal, flax, beige, sand, whatever you want to call it…this soft shade feels more fresh than your regular browns and greys right now.

2. Ribbed tank top

I’ve noticed that the classic ribbed tank top has become the go-to of many style bloggers lately. And all you have to do to get the look is buy a pack of Hanes mens tank tops. You can hack them off with scissors if you like to show a little stomach. I’m all for a cheap and easy style staple.

3. Chocolate brown accessories:

Chocolate brown is color that is trending hard at the moment and one of the easiest, most classic ways to incorporate it into your wardrobe is with polished accessories. Think mock croc shoulder bags and classic patent brown mules.

4. Straight leg jeans

It’s been all about high waisted straight leg 90s denim for the last few seasons, but I have noticed a shift away from cropped jeans and towards extra long jeans that slouch a bit at the bottom. Think Kendall Jenner here. Find a pair of extra long jeans like these and everything else you wear with them will look instantly more fresh.

The Flare Jeans I am Obsessed With Right Now

The Flare Jeans I am Obsessed With Right Now

Happy weekend everyone. I hope you all have fun plans to enjoy the spring weather.  I am really looking forward to my usual Sunday styling session this week. While I was recovering from surgery I spent a lot of time online shopping (oops) and now I have a pile of new (well, mostly old but new to me) stuff to delve into styling. These 00’s Lauren Ralph Lauren boots were one of my eBay purchases (a steal at 18 dollars). It feels like such a throwback wearing pointed mock-croc  ankle boots with flares!

These flare jeans are some of my favorite jeans I have ever owned. I was lusting after them when I saw them online, but while I was in New York a few weeks ago I got to try them on in person. So. Good. I have talked about this before, but Moussy is doing some of the best denim out there. The jeans are 100% cotton, and that makes such a massive difference in the quality of the fit to me. These really hug you in and retain their shape! The leg has just the right amount of flare. I think I have met my denim soulmate.

These jeans are on sale at Shopbop right now, they look a bit odd on the model because I think they have her in a size that is too big. You can also get these jeans at Frwrd by Elyse Walker and Revolve, but if they don’t have your size, call the Moussy store in Soho.

*A note on Moussy sizing: I go up a size in Moussy. I am 5″6 and I am usually a size 24, but here I am wearing the 25! My sister and mom take one size up in Moussy as well, so I would do that if you haven’t tried them before.

Wearing Moussy flare Luna jeans with a vintage faux fur sweater, Imago-A bag, and Lauren Ralph Lauren 00’s mock croc boots.
