Perfect Autumn Coat

Perfect Autumn Coat

This 80’s Bill Blass coat is something I have had for years and I look forward to wearing every winter. It’s definitely too hot to wear it right now but we did a quick shoot with it just because it felt so right for fall. It’s been raining here all week and I’m totally in the mood for warm colors like these. I’m wearing this coat with a vintage blouse, Golden Goose jeans, and Dries Van Noten boots.

Here are a collection of great vintage coats I’ve found that won’t break the bank but will keep you warm for years to come!

80s Knitwear Trend

80s Knitwear Trend

I’ve noticed 80s inspired fair isle knit sweaters have been trending and I could not be more thrilled as an enthusiastic lover of kitschy sweaters. The broad shoulders and nubby texture of these sweaters have a surprisingly high fashion look at the moment. I’ve mixed my teal vintage 80s sweater with a concho belt and dark rinse denim here. I think western accessories play into the 80s knitwear trend perfectly, its something we’ve seen a lot of on the runway. I’m definitely going to be seeking out more of these fun chunky sweaters to wear as we ease into the sweater weather half of the year. The color and texture make for very fun styling, like this this fabulously 80s purple yoked sweater from pushButton.

Hair Tutorial: Romantic Braid and Pouf Hairstyle

Hair Tutorial: Romantic Braid and Pouf Hairstyle

Last week I posted this hairstyle in my stories and I got a ton of requests for a tutorial on it. I’m glad you guys liked it and I am happy to show you how to do it! This is actually not a very complicated hairstyle to do. Let’s get started.

Note: You will notice I use a hair styling tool called “hot sticks”. These are my go-to styling tool for any kind of vintage hairstyling. They are great for creating hairstyles from the 1700’s all the way through the 1940s. They are little rubber rods that you wrap your hair around and attach together at the ends. They create very tight curls and a ton of body in the hair. If your hair does not hold curl well, these are a great styling tool. If you have any interest in vintage hairstyling, I definitely suggest buying some hot sticks. You can get them from Babyliss or Conair. I use the Babyliss Hot Sticks here. I like these better than the Conair hot sticks because the Babyliss has 20 rather than 14 rollers. I have hair that doesn’t hold curl well, so the more rollers the better for me. When you plug hot rollers in, allow at least 15 minutes for them to get hot.

Sweatshirt Style: 5 New Styling Ideas for A Closet Staple

Sweatshirt Style: 5 New Styling Ideas for A Closet Staple

Sweatshirts are one of my favorite items to collect for their comfiness and endless styling possibilities. I look for vintage athletic sweatshirts from the 1950s and 1970s novelty sweatshirts, but I feel good about buying new ones because they are style staples for me that I know I will wear for years to come.  Sweatshirts are also one of those items of clothing that look better the more you wash and wear them. Though they are often relegated to errand runs and staying inside watching movies on chilly days, sweatshirts have been having a big moment in street style.

What I’m Picking Up For Fall

What I’m Picking Up For Fall

I don’t think I’m alone when I say I am completely over summer. I’ve given up styling summer looks because I am so uninspired by the idea of looking at another sundress. Don’t get me wrong, pretty airy dresses are all that makes sense to wear in 99 degree weather. But they do get old after months on end of wear. So I’ve just plunged ahead and started styling fall looks. We shoot all of our photos around 7 AM, so it’s no big deal when I want to style something a bit warmer.

Wearing Vintage Adolfo

Wearing Vintage Adolfo

I’ve been collecting vintage Adolfo for over ten years now and my collection takes up a large amount of space in my wardrobe. I am so happy when I am dressed in Adolfo. I just love wearing boucle, the texture and weight feels so luxurious to me. This skirt is part of a suit, but I tend to wear the jacket and skirt separately. Worn together the suit can look a little too Nancy Reagan. With a cropped sweater, however, the skirt feels very modern and gets a new spin on life. Spending all those years building up my Adolfo collection and finding new ways to wear it is a very rewarding challenge!

Easing Into Fall

Easing Into Fall

Click on the items to shop the looks!

I know many of you can relate when I say I am so ready for summer to be over. This week we’ve had a lot of rain, and the cooler mornings and cloudy skies have me craving sweater weather. I miss the ease of wearing the perfect camel pullover. It never fails to make any look chic. I also miss boots and I’m loving the return to the simple suede pointed boots of the late 90s. How perfect to pair with a cropped pant and a cozy wrap coat!

FASHION IN FILM: A Star is Born (1976)

FASHION IN FILM: A Star is Born (1976)

If you follow me on Instagram, and particularly on my Instagram stories, you know I watch a lot of old movies and I’m always posting clips of  great fashion moments from them. Movies are undoubtedly my favorite way to find styling inspiration and vintage shopping ideas. One of the most frequently requested posts here on Sea of Shoes is a list of my favorite films for fashion inspiration. That sounds extremely hard to narrow down for me and a bulletpoint list doesn’t seem to do it any justice. I figured a better way to address this was with a new series on the blog where I highlight movies with incredible wardrobes and set design, screen grabbing the best shots to slow down and savor all of the best moments from them. I’m no serious film buff, just an enthusiastic watcher, and I’m really excited to embark on this series. I hope you will watch along with me!

I thought a timely film to start with, and really an all-timer of great fashion films, would the Barbra Streisand remake of a Star is Born. In preparation for the new one with Lady Gaga, I have rewatched all of the Star is Born movies and this version is my favorite purely for the clothes and sets. This movie is on Netflix right now, by the way. My mom watched it around the same time as me, and we had an extremely long storm of texts freaking out about the outfits and sets.

I highly recommend listening to the You Must Remember This podcast episode about the making of this to better appreciate how completely insane a concept it was. It’s full blown and over the top cheese, which isn’t for everyone’s taste, but it is extremely mine. I watched it twice back to back to get this post together and it only made me love this movie more.

Let’s go over the best looks from the movie. There will be no plot spoilers if you haven’t seen this, so jump on in with me.
