HAIR HOW-TO

BeautyGuidesHair
Oct 20, 2011

I am sometimes asked how I style my hair, and while my method is far from perfect, I thought I'd show you how!  My hair is pretty straight and fine naturally and I always let it air dry. Since I go about three days between washes, I like to curl it on the first day and let it mellow out into some nice waves over the next two.

Let's get started!

If your hair doesn't hold curl very well then you may want to put a palmful of curling mousse in it when it is halfway dry. First I comb out all of the tangles and apply a liberal amount  CHI Iron Guard Protection Spray to prep my hair. Then I stick the top part up in a clippy so I can curl the bottom strands first. To curl my hair I use a Bed Head 1-inch styling iron (though I want to upgrade to one of the fancy new ones from Sultra soon!) When I curl the bottom half of my hair, I take 2" sections and alternate the direction in which I curl them (do one section wrapping it away from the face, and the next one towards the face). I just wrap the hair around the curling rod, I do not use the clamp! You should let the curl slide off the heating rod, and cool completely in your hand before you let it fall.

When I'm done curling the bottom section, I mist it with Bumble and bumble Spray de Mode  and comb through the curl with my fingers. Then I move on to the top section. On the top part, I curl all of the hair away from my face to get that flowy beachy look. I leave about an inch of the bottom section off the curling rod to keep from totally singing the ends, and it makes it look a bit more natural and lived in.

Ahh!! Huge hair! Well, with my fine hair, the curl usually calms down a lot after about an hour. I just run my fingers through it and go with it.

If you want to dress it up a little, you can do a braided headband look! Take a small section of hair below your ear and braid it, but not too tight so that it stays long enough to wrap around your head.

Find a spot on the opposite side of your head and pin it so that it blends in naturally with the rest of your hairstyle.

Well, that's it! Not too hard. Hope this answers any questions.

MAGAZINE RUN

Fashion
Oct 18, 2011

Yesterday I made a quick run to Barnes & Noble to pick up a few magazines. By some miracle, they actually had Vogue Paris. Normally they don't stock it out here. A cold front blew in and I am celebrating finally being able to wear jackets and tights after the hottest summer ever!

Wearing a Richard Chai aviator jacket from several years ago, a t-shirt dress c/o Herff Christiansen, one of the beautiful scarves sent to my mom and I by Kelly Wearstler,  my beloved Laurence Dacade buckle boots, and the Vogue Eyewear & CFDA City glasses by Yeohlee, available at Sunglass Hut.

FULL BLOOM

I'm wearing a 20's ruffled slip dress I've been holding on to forever…what took me so long to wear it?? My mom and I had fun taking these pictures…we were walking along a bike path and it went into these dense woods. It felt like an enchanted forest!

Wearing a vintage cardigan from Feathers Boutique in Austin, jeans whose brand I've forgotten, and Yohji Yamamoto metallic brogues.

A picture of my mom and I together–she's wearing my favorite shoes of hers! We never take pictures together because we're always shooting each other. My dad came along to take this :)

THE SHOE TRAILER

Fashion
Oct 12, 2011

An airstream trailer is the last place you would expect to be trying on a pair of beautiful Laurence Dacade boots, but thats what I did this weekend! Bootleg is the world's only shoe boutique run out of an trailer. What a brilliant idea! Bootleg is located on South Congress in Austin,  nestled in with a few other food trucks. You'll find lots of hard-to-find designers inside Bootleg, like Esquivel and Camilla Skovgaard. Sarah from Bootleg was so sweet to give me an amazing pair of satin boots–I can't wait to show them!

How fabulous to sit by the pool at San Jose Hotel and then walk downt the street to try on shoes, and maybe grab a cupcake from a food truck. Wish I was doing that today!

I'd also like to announce the winner of the Style Yourself moodboard contest…I realize this is long overdue, and I apologize! Thanks to everyone who entered, there were so many great entries. Congratulations to Lene from Norway, who created the beautiful moodboard below :)

AUSTIN DIARIES

Oct 11, 2011

As I mentioned in my last post, we were in Austin this weekend to check out the Vintage Glamporium show. We love any excuse to get up to Austin, and we knew with the line-up of vendors at the show, the shopping was going to be amazing. It did not dissapoint-it was a magical vintage candy land! I'm still dreaming of some of the things we left behind… Masha from Feathers boutique organized it, so of course it was incredible. I can't wait to share some of the crazy things we found.

On our drive down to Austin we hit up Style Station. Its a must-stop for road trips, I found the perfect 70's 505s and lots of cool tees and blouses.

Below are some pics from the Vintage Glamporium.

I love this display from Laced With Romance (amazing eBay store that now has a retail location in Austin!)

The Vintage Mobile came to town too for the show! Nice to see you again, Vintage Mobile.

Kim was a little tired after a long afternoon of vintage shopping. Sorry Kim! Have a margarita.

Of course we can't not go to Toy Joy when we are in Austin….we went under the premise of buying gifts for our very small neighbors, but ended up getting lots of plastic animals for ourselves.

Toy Joy also has a bubble tea bar in the back…I love the little kitties on their chalkboard.

We had the great pleasure of staying at the W Hotel in Austin. It made the trip so wonderful–I think we ate at their restaurant Trace every meal! They had the best crab cake ever.

The cozy library at the W.

I have to share this–when we arrived at our room at the W, there was a greeting card personally adressed to Kim. Inside was a warm welcome and a picture of a chihuahua that looked just like Kim. We are going to save this forever and ever. So cute!!

I wish I had some more pictures of what we brought back from the vintage show. I do have to show this 50s fur cardigan and teal dirndl corset that I got from Feathers. I have worn them together for two days straight…

I have to post about the coolest shoe store I've ever been to–definitely one of the highlights Austin had to offer. Check back tomorrow!

KELLY WEARSTLER

We were so excited to recieve these amazing pieces from Kelly Wearstler's newly launched fashion line. I am a huge fan of everything Kelly does. It was like Christmas morning the day these got here! Even the packaging was 100% Kelly's style. We recycled the wrapping paper into a backdrop for these photos. The little black dress I'm wearing above is my favorite piece.

The necklaces look so great layered up. The wrap around cuff is INCREDIBLE!

Wearing the Gypsum jacket. I'm going to Austin this weekend, I will be packing this!

I feel like these few pieces have totally rounded out my wardrobe for fall–they're so perfect and easy. Thank you so much to Kelly for these incredible clothes! I'm packing them all up for a weekend jaunt to Austin. Can't wait!

FROM MY NOTEBOOK

Fashion
Oct 4, 2011

Here are some scans from my cluttered, kind of schizo notebook. Most of the magazine clippings are from 2007. That seems to be where most of my magazine collection dates back to. It was a good year! I like to keep a notebook…it's a good transitional step towards making your ideas happen.

LOOKING GLASS

Fashion
Oct 3, 2011

It's amazing how you can pull out something random and fall in love with it all over again. My mom and I had picked up this sequin tank top at Cheap Thrills in Tulsa, Oklahoma a while back. We were told it was made for a local fashion show in the sixties. I had never tried it on, and I didn't imagine it would be so form-fitting and slinky. I had pulled out this 50's petticoat and was looking for a way to make it go formal. I think this tank top was just the thing.
