My Mom’s Thrift Store Home Makeover

My Mom’s Thrift Store Home Makeover

If you follow my mom or me on Instagram, you’ve probably seen some of the peeks we’ve been posting of this project over the last few weeks! Recently my mom decided to redo her home only using items purchased from thriftstores. We are both thrifting junkies and we had so much fun over the last few weeks seeking out these pieces! I’ve been really excited to show you her makeover.

She just left for Oaxaca this weekend, but I caught up with my mom to to share a little bit more about the project in her own words…

“I have dreamed for years of having a blank palette for a home, and the opportunity to fill it with items found from local thrift stores. I finally decided to fulfill my dream, and accomplish it in only three weeks.

The process of choosing the pieces was decided for me by the thrift store merchandise I encountered. Because I had allowed myself only three weeks to complete the project, I knew I had to choose quickly. I realized some pieces would need to be reupholstered, and some other TLC would be needed for other pieces. I tried to choose somewhat average pieces so that anyone reading this story could say, “I see that stuff all the time! I can do this easily myself. “

When it came to reupholstering the chairs and sofa, I chose fabric from local outlets at 10-20 dollars per yard. I chose to buy from thrift stores that only accepted donations, so that money I spent would go directly to good causes. During this project, I made donations to Salvation Army, Genesis Womens Shelter, and The Carrolton Food Bank and CitySquare Dallas.

Thank you so much to Again and Again Dallas for sponsoring the remake of the painted and upholstered pieces, and much needed style guidance and hand holding. It was such a fun project, and a great way to leave a smaller foot print while redoing your home. I can’t wait to do it again!”

NECESSARY ITEM: leather shift dress

NECESSARY ITEM: leather shift dress

Leather-Dresskk

While I was in New York last week, I went to Beacon’s Closet in Brooklyn and picked up this amazing vintage leather shift. Based on the zippers and structure, I’d say it is from the early 70s. What a great find and such a good piece for easing into fall! I wore it over jeans and with a poet blouse underneath earlier this week as well.  I love when I love a vintage find so much I have to wear it for a few days non-stop…

Wearing leather shift dress with Club Monaco striped tee, Armani shoes, and Lotuff’s shoulder strap Tripp bag.

Speaking of repeats, I am feeling guilty for neglecting my other shoes. These Armani cap-toe pumps have been the shoes I wear with everything since I got them. Obsessed with the bows and sparkly gems on them! Below are some similar styles I’ve been eyeing to add to my rotation…

NEW NEW NEW

NEW NEW NEW

Snaps from the weekend in New York! It was a wonderful trip, always too short. I guess this is my first blog post with my new hair! I loved how it turned out and I am seriously loving the low-maintenance cut. Thank you to my friend Jessica Watts at Chad Rookstool salon for the amazing cut and Rachel at Hair by Charlie for the color! My hair feels so much healthier now. Changing it was kind of a sudden decision but I’m glad I took a chance! I was pretty scared going into it because red is a color that is very hard to change from. I’m going to spend a  few months stabilizing this dark brunette shade in my hair, then maybe I will go lighter. Maybe not, though. Kind of loving the dramatic dark color!

By the way, I did an interview with Byrdie right after I dyed my hair to discuss everything that goes into a big change like that. Go read it here!

I was so excited to bring this jacket to New York. I am a massive fan of designer Vicky Tiel’s 70s and 80s pieces. She did stunning couture evening gowns that went for all of the drama. If you want a juicy read, pick up her autobiography. Fascinating look into what it really meant to live Hollywood glamour!  This jacket’s construction is really fantastic. It is as beautiful on the inside as it is on the outside.

I always stay at the Soho Grand Hotel when I’m in New York. It is home away from home for me! We love their patio tiki bar (called Gilligan’s). The frozen watermelon margaritas there are lethal but so delicious. It was getting chilly at night and the leaves were starting to turn. Perfect weekend weather!

I am glad to be home and I have some projects going on that I am really excited about. My mom is redoing her whole house right now in items found only from the thrift-store. We’ve been hitting our favorite thrift shops every day for a couple of weeks now and the bounty she’s accumulated is looking pretty incredible. Once the final touches are done I will post the big unveil here! Stay tuned.

VINTAGE ADOLFO and a goodbye to my red hair!

I do like these cut-off shorts lately. They were a good contrast to this very prim vintage Adolfo jacket. Such a favorite piece of vintage for me! I recently reorganized my closet and grouped all of my nubby vintage boucle jackets together. It makes me laugh because there is this huge chunk of my closet that looks like it belongs to Nancy Reagan. It’s a look I love though and seeing them all together makes me so happy.

I also want to note that this is my last day as a redhead. I have an appointment scheduled tomorrow and I am doing something different! I’ve been thinking about it for a while and then something snapped and I wanted a new look right away. I loved red hair I am super excited for a fresh look. My friend Jessica cut my hair today into something shorter that I really love! I can’t wait to show you guys!!!

80s QUILTED VEST

80s QUILTED VEST

This 80s quilted vest is such a great piece! Its by a small designer my mom and I are collecting right now. This vest is actually one continuous piece of fabric held together by two small snaps on the side, the structure is so cool.

I’m wearing some vintage Levi’s I cut off into long shorts recently, I didn’t know if I would like how they looked at first. Now I actually really like them! I’m wearing them with some super witchy Manolo heels I scored on eBay a few years ago. Seriously some of my favorite shoes ever.

Wearing vintage vest, blouse, and shorts with Manolo Blahnik sandals.

I love a black open-toe bootie with most any outfit. It’s the perfect sexy tomboy shoe to ground a look that might otherwise feel too girly. These Stuart Weitzmans are so great for fall and are so comfy for everyday wear. This is a look I’ll be doing a lot in the next few months! I was inspired glimpsing Gisele in the Koko boots while watching the VMAs. Flashdance chic!

I was in Rome last week working on an exciting project! It was such a magical trip and I can’t wait to share what we were up to. While I had a little bit of downtime I went exploring and I fell in love with these shoes at Armani. They’re covered in mirror glass beads and have a satin cap toe and a carved deco-style heel. So special and one-of-a-kind! They may be some of my favorite shoes of all time.

I love the burnt orange tones and turquoise in this skirt. It’s a recent vintage find and I’ve been wearing it constantly!
