Fashion in Film: A Perfect Murder (1998)

Fashion in Film
Sep 17, 20197 Comments

There are so many 90’s Gwynnie movies that could be in Fashion in Film. One of my personal favorites: A Perfect Murder, a 1998 thriller directed by Andrew Davis starring Gwyneth Paltrow, Michael Douglas, and Viggo Mortensen. Gwyneth Paltrow is Michael Douglas’s pretty young wife, who is cheating on him with a vagabond artist (Viggo Mortensen). I won’t tell you more than that because it would reveal the plot, and this is actually a highly watchable movie so don’t just look at these screengrabs, rent it to see yourself at home! It is a lot of fun, even though the supposedly amazing art that Viggo Mortensen creates in this movie actually hurts my eyes. Michael Douglas is a lot of fun to watch in the role of a homicidal husband.

Gwyneth’s look is NY art collector meets Carolyn Bissette meets Connecticut country club. Which is to say, it rules! I die for the chocolate shearling coat she wears for a lot of this movie. There are also two scenes where she wears an amazing paisley shawl with a chunky sweater and tube skirt and suede boots I am obsessing over. Taking notes on the headband and silk neck scarf tucked into thick crew neck knits too. That is definitely going to be a good look for fall 2019.

Rent this movie on iTunes or Amazon!

Spot on, Jane! 90s Gwyneth costuming was iconic. Great Expectations had me wanting all shades of green. Her pixie in Sliding Doors was perfection. Thanks for the inspiration.

Hi Jane, I have enjoyed your site since its inception! You are an endless inspiration to me. I love every aspect of your eclectic taste in fashion, art, and movies alike. As a costume designer myself, I encourage you to credit the hardworking costume designers behind these looks. In this case, it is the legendary Ellen Mirojnick. I look forward to each and every post you make. All the best, Megan <3

For movie fans, please note this film is a remake of ‘M for Murder’ from Alfred Hitchock, with the gorgeous Grace Kelly. He made deliberate style choices throughout the film, and the colors moved from pale pink, vibrant red to grey and dull taupe from beginning to end, in line with the narrative. If you liked this movie, I recommend you watch the original (superior in quality and interpretation). But this version is not too bad, and the style is faultless indeed. I can’t remember whether similar stylistic choices were made in terms of color evolution in line with the plot. I’ll have to watch this 90s version again.

Also the Hermes Kelly bag Gwyneth dons in the last few screenshots is a fun little homage to Grace Kelly, in the original :)

Thanks for the recommendation! Some of the pics above perfectly capture the essence of 90s looks. I also wanted to thank you for recommending ‘Blood and black lace’ a couple of months ago. I watched the movie, loved it and I’ve been obsessed with giallo since then. Have you watched ‘Salvare la faccia’ (Psychout for murder, in the American version)? It’s not a giallo, but more of a thriller with Adrienne La Russa and her outfits are insane. If you’re looking for some late sixties inspo, you’re going to enjoy this movie :)

I loved that movie. In the late 90s, I had a very similar coat and the Hermes scarf she wore (not the bag, sadly!) Thank you for capturing the gorgeous photos.
