DOE EYES

BeautyMakeup
Apr 1, 2011

I've been watching a lot of old films lately and I am fascinated by the bambi-eyed makeup so many of the stars wore. They painted on inky socket lines to give their eyes depth and left the rest of the eye light to make it really rounded like a babydoll's. I like Edie Sedgwick's heavy-handed approach.

Beautiful Sharon Tate's eyemake up was always exquisite. What a knockout.

Can't leave Twiggy out of this.

The above picture really shows what a throwback this kind of eye makeup was to that of 30's film stars like Greta Garbo.

Greta's deep, expressive eyes were enhanced with this same kind of makeup–you can even see it in illustrations of her.

A semi-Harlequin 60's Dior beauty ad scanned by Beauty Is A Warm Gun.

I like the way Anna Karina surrounds the whole lid with black.

I'm trying to perfect this doe-eyed look. I have very shallow eyelids so it's nice to fake a little bone structure. Hope you enjoyed the makeup inspiration! Thank you to the contributors of TFS for the scans and links to these pictures.

TULSA

Mar 31, 2011

Here are some pictures of our weekend jaunt to Tulsa. It was such a gloomy weekend there! In spite of the rain we ended up having a great time.

This from one of my favorite stores, Cheap Thrills. I got that crazy feather hat in my last post at this store, and the bandana circle skirt that I'm twirling in above.

We always stop for a latte here.

Love this Fiat X19- what a clunker. My mom drove one in high school. This was parked outside of the Buchanan flea market. We got some amazing jewelry there, will post soon.

This prom dress is from Silver Screen Vintage, another one of our favorite Tulsa stops. My mom and I needed a bunch of prom dresses for a project we're working on. We left this dress in particular behind.

This faux fur maxi dress was too great not to try on. My mom got this 50's fox stole.

We love to eat at Kilkenny's irish pub in Tulsa. As we were exiting the restarunt, I bumped into this authentic Irish patron. I had to ask him if I could take his picture and he was kind enough to oblige me.

Kim, of course, was with us every step of the way. She is such a great travel companion. What would we do without Kim??

I wish we had some extra time in Tulsa–and I wish I had the camera equipment I left behind. I would have loved to photograph some of my favorite art deco buildings. I'm eager to get back very soon!!

SWASHBUCKLER

Back from Tulsa! Our trip started off on the wrong foot-we forgot everything. I forgot my favorite camera lens, mom forgot her wallet, purse, and our toiletries–I thought the trip was doomed, but it ended up yielding some amazing finds, like this Yankee Doodle costume hat and 70's poet blouse. They inspired my mom and I to shoot this Pirates of the Carribean ensemble…more like Pirates of North Texas. The concha belt is my moms, she got it 20 years ago. The skirt is Atlantis Underground-my moms clothing line from the 80s.  I'll post more of our finds soon!

SOME FAVORITE THINGS

Fashion
Mar 26, 2011

My mom, my sister, and I have been long time collectors of Serge Lutens inventive fragranes–my sister and my mom hoard Five O'Clock Au Gigembre. I'm more of a Fille en Aguilles and Dam Blond girl myself. They're so full-bodied and rich.

We were recently sent a bottle of Jeux de Peau and it is my new favorite–caramelized and warm. The cute bottle with the girl on it is Nana de Bary and it smells as good as it looks. My boyfriend likes it too. We have all been wearing Byredo Accord Oud–it's very woodsy and leathery, my favorite kind of scent! Thank you so much for the sweet gift Meredith!

I've been wearing Cannabis Santal by Fresh for years and get compliments on it wherever I go–and no, it won't make you smell like a musty hippy.

My mom and I picked up this unusual clutch at an antique mall last month. It's very old. We've been calling it the kabuki clutch. The chinese character necklace is my new favorite piece of jewelry. My friend told me it meant 'strive for happiness'. The split-toe Celine flats are my mom's–agh, jealous.

I've been enjoying the nice weather by playing with chalk outside–my neighbor's kids like this spotted chalk I got at Target.

Can't have a favorite things post without plastic animals. They're having a Hello Kitty tea party! My mom and I found this tea set at an airport toy store.

This is called a Tijuana dog–a hotdog wrapped in bacon garnished with pineapple slices, roasted jalapenos, and topped with sour cream with lime zest. Now you know–our neighbors introduced us to them!

This is a 60's trompe l'oeil t-shirt from Vintage Martini–it's from Neiman Marcus. It's so funny to imagine something so wacky hanging in Neimans.

My mom and I found these cool Monster High girls at Target and I love them. Remember the shaving Monster High doll that made headlines last week? Well, duh she has to shave all the time–she's a werewolf! Party poopers. We would have gotten the teen werewolf but they were all out. Anyway, we got the zombie and the vampire.

I'm in Tulsa this weekend–hope to update you with some pictures of our finds soon.

UNIFORM

Fashion
Mar 23, 2011

A little bit of a boring outfit today–but much more true to my everyday uniform than what I might normally post. I try to load up on silk blouses at the thrift store when I go, right now I'm really obsessed with the double pockets on this shirt. I got these jeans in Tokyo two years ago–they're actually men's jeans. I had been looking for skinny jeans with a slight flare forever. The denim is so heavy–I can't stand thin stretch denim. Makes my skin crawl.

The pouch utility belt I'm wearing is Le Grand Bleu from Tokyo too–I love it because I don't have to carry a purse. I wear these Dries Van Noten buckle sling backs day in and day out.

SUPER GIRL

I picked up this cool wolverine mask in Target's toy aisle this weekend. My mom and I were supposed to be shopping for some excersise equipment but got sidetracked by the toys. They have a whole aisle dedicated to bubble blowing paraphanelia. Who knew? We spent an hour looking at all of the toys–I'll have to post some of the cool toys we got later this week.

I haven't posted this vintage tiger dress–I love the tigers on them. They're carrying flowers. Worn with patent leather knee high spats (!!) by Posso the Spat for an extra superhero touch, and a vintage Judith Lieber doorknocker belt.

I could be Space Ghost's sidekick…I feel like more of a Zorak though.

The lipstick I'm wearing is Guerlain's Gala 21.

I like how serious the tiger looks while he's holding a flower.

Hope you enjoyed the silly post :) Maybe I'll have to start looking for more masks, they're fun to wear!

HEAD IN THE CLOUDS

My sister had this funny nebulous backdrop lying around after she used it for a school project, I had fun taking these photos with it yesterday. I'm wearing an 80's sequin shirt from Vintage Martini and an incredible skirt made with antique lace by Magda Berliner. My mom got it for me as a birthday gift when Magda had her trunk show at V.O.D. boutique in  December. I was sad to be in New York at the time because I love Magda's line! Worn with Hue tights and vintage jewelry.

My thoughts are with those who have friends and family in Japan. What an unbelievable morning.

I found a huge stash of photos from last spring's trip to Japan. They bring back such fond memories, I couldn't resist publishing them!
