MAGAZINE MOUNTAIN

Fashion
May 26, 2011

I have to get rid of some magazines before my shelves collapse! I'm going to sort through them, I've got to keep my favorites!

Wearing Prada pumps, AG jeans, a cashmere turtleneck from a thrift store, and a vintage stole. I got the glasses from a vintage store in Austin.

Kim loves to read!

Toys, toys, toys!

I have so much fun when I visit Tokyo, but my favorite thing to do by far is explore all of the toy stores. You can spend hours and hours in toy stores like Kiddy Land and Hakuhinkan just tripping out on all of the cute (and bizarre) toys.

Luckily I can browse Rakuten's english site for cute Japanese toys. Rakuten is a huge online shopping site in Japan–their english site is kind of hilarious because everything is just ran through a translator. Check out this listing I found for a 'worn-out, exhausted plush leopard'.

Have fun browsing, fellow toy enthusiasts!

CHANGES

Notice anything different? I got bangs. I haven't had a real haircut in a billion years. All the better to minimize my huge face with I think, haha.

I also wanted to say thank you so much to all of the other bloggers and readers who retweeted Hanna Bernhard's story. HSN emailed us on Thursday to let us know they are pulling the pin from Iris Apfel's collection. That's very big of them! Nathalie is so happy.

The shirt I'm wearing is a 70's tee I got in Tulsa, it's the coolest shirt I have. I want to duplicate in a million color schemes. The skirt is 80's Thierry Mugler.

Disappointed

Disappointed

If you follow my blog, you'll know that my mother and I are huge fans of Hanna Bernhard's jewelry. Natalie is also a dear friend, and we were so upset and shocked to receive this distress signal from her this morning.

Natalie has always been so proud to have fashion icon Iris Apfel as a customer. Iris has been photographed wearing Hanna Bernhard on many occasions. It must have been a real sting to see a knock-off of her own jewelry splashed across Racked.com, under the headline 'Iris Apfel for HSN'.

My mom and I are so disappointed to see this. Shame on Iris for taking credit for a design that is not her's for the sake of lining her own pockets. Natalie and her husband should be compensated for this design.

Below is Iris wearing the original Hanna Bernhard toucan brooch.

And here is Iris Apfel's replica of Hanna Bernhard's design.

Below is the original toucan brooch that Iris Apfel purchased from Hanna Bernhard!

How disheartening. We always admired Iris's style. It is just awful to see her blatantly copy the work of our good friend. This isn't over yet, and you can be sure my mom and I will be on team Hanna Bernhard all the way.

Lace Up Miu Miu’s

My lace-up Miu Miu shoes got here from Net-a-Porter! They are a hundred times more beautiful in person, the yellow on them is  blindingly bright! I'm in love. Best shoes ever.

HOT SUMMER

Fashion
May 14, 2011

We've had a really mild spring this year, usually it seems like its 100 degrees by March. So I'm trying to enjoy this breezy weather while we can!!

The tunic is a 1950's tourist piece from an Indian reserve in Florida that I found at a flea  market in Tulsa. Worn with some of my moms old turqoise she got in Santa Fe, AG jeans, and Roberto Cavalli sandals from 2001.

MONSTER HIGH

Fashion
May 13, 2011

My mom and I have been working all week on an exciting upcoming collaboration with Monster High! When I first blogged about the dolls I never dreamed I’d get the chance to work with them. I love the design of the dolls, from their fangs to their fluttery eyelashes all the way down to their clunky boots. Every doll has an imperfection of it’s own–Frankie Stein says her limbs come unstitched at cheerleading sometimes. Aww.  I think we’ve all been there. It’s fun to have a toy that lets you get in touch with the monster inside you ;) We were so excited to get a big box of Monster High dolls from Mattel last week! It was like Christmas.

Here are a few behind the scenes iPhone snaps from this week!

Hope your Friday the thirteenth isn’t too spooky ;) I’m going to go pick a scary movie!

P.S. Monster High has a fun Monsterfy Yourself app on Facebook–you can make a Monster High avatar of yourself! Here is mine.

Q&A with Nicholas Kirkwood!

Q&A with Nicholas Kirkwood!

I was beyond excited to have the opportunity to interview Nicholas Kirkwood while he was passing through town.  We met for tea and had a very enjoyable 2 hour conversation at the Crescent. Nicholas and his assitant were a little tired from going to a late night rodeo. Nicholas was so down to earth and so much fun to talk to! Hope you enjoy the Q&A.

If you weren't a shoe designer, what would you be doing?

I think I would still be doing another type of product design. I was always interested in architecture but I didn't want to be in college for seven years. It could have easily been furniture design too I think. After doing fine art at college and then doing an internship at Phillip Treacy, I really felt that accessory design was my calling.

Your shoes have a very animalistic, predatorial feel to them. They often look like they're about to pounce. Is that intentional?

It's not necessarily intentional, but I see what you mean. I think I would say they're aerodynamic, I try to put a little bit of movement in the shoe. I haven't thought about it that way but its much more dynamic!

I have to ask, were your parents super proud of you when you won the British Fashion accessory award?

Yes, they were, they've been very supportive of me since the beginning. They've watched it grow and of course they were delighted! They both came to the ceremony.

Does your mom wear your shoes?

She had them–she wears my flat shoes! I have started doing some lower heels but they aren't quite low enough for her.

What music do you listen to when you design shoes?

I wait until everybody is out of the office so I can play really noisy music with guitars!

What is the most challenging part of being a shoe designer?

Juggling  time! I'm in Italy three days a week. It's a struggle finding time to actually design. Something always comes up. I've only had one week's vacation in seven years. Time is definitely the biggest challenge.

Do you have a favorite shoe you've ever designed?

It keeps changing. You think you've designed your favorite shoe, and then something better comes along. If I ever design what I think is a perfect shoe, then I'd just stop designing. What would be the point of making worse shoes after that? I want the look to evolve constantly.

Who is your favorite shoe designer besides yourself?

I'd say Andre Perugia, Rogier Vivier and Ferragamo because for the periods they were designing inthey were doing things that had never been done before. They really pushed the boundaries of technology and shape for their time.

What are you doing in Dallas, besides going to the rodeo?

Haha, we came for the rodeo! No, we came to visit a couple of stores–we're touring the states trying to visit as many of the stores who carry us as possible. For two weeks I've been in a plane almost every day! Next up is Chicago.

I've noticed that you like to mix the materials you work in. What materials are you working i right now?

When I started out I was into using unusual materials more, I use less of a mix now and focus more on customizing the materials I do work in. For example, screen-printing or laser cutting or customized textiles. None of these are new techniques but it helps make sure that it's not going to be what anyone else is doing.

Last question: if you could ban one shoe, what would it be?

Where do I start?? Let's leave it at crocs and high heel sneakers!

Thank you so much for your time Nicholas, hope the rest of your travels were happy and we can't wait to see what you do next!
