The Best No-Heat Curls Ever

The Best No-Heat Curls Ever

Bottega-veneta-rtw-fw2013-detail-25_08334249432
I am hair-obsessed and love to play around with new styles. The downside to this is that it often times involves using some form of direct heat on your hair. In light of this viral Youtube video, I feel like its an appropriate time to post about the miraculous no-heat styling solution one of my sweet readers reccomended to me a while back. The solution is a little old-school: Caruso Professional Steam Hairsetter.

These are just like hot rollers except instead of using dry heat to set
the curl, it is set with steam. They barely get hot at all. My hair does not usually hold curl well, but that is not the case with these. I have tried so many methods of styling my hair without heat and I have not found one that is as practical and fool-proof as this. The best part is that unlike other no-heat curling methods, this only takes about 30 minutes from start to finish!

You use them just as you would regular rollers, it is not one bit different. Doesn't take any skill or know-how. If you want Victoria's Secret supermodel hair, it is easy with these! But if you like a retro look, you can do Veronica Lake style just as easily. It all depends on how you set the rollers. I actually got so into roller sets that I ordered sixties and seventies hairstyling books that tell you exactly how to put in the rollers for a variety of looks. Like this. So retro and fun! Tweet me a picture if you try or have tried styles with these!

My mom and I headed out to Marfa brimming with inspiration and new ideas and methods we wanted to explore. We were making the long drive to Marfa and took some backroads along the way. Soon we reached a land of brushy sandhills and eery see-sawing oil pumps. It was perfect, we knew it was exactly what we needed. We pulled over on the side of the road, lassoed our chihuahuas to the steering wheel, layed our suitcases out on the side of the dirt road and did an impromptu styling session. It was insane and hilarious, but such a magical moment for us both.

Wearing vintage clothing from Feathers boutique in Austin. That striped sweater is 80s Givenchy Sport and the skirts are 70s.

Girls Raised in the South
G.R.I.T.S = Girls Raised in the South!

I got this cool G.R.I.T.S. Outlaws shirt in Austin last month. I love the look of leather pants and concho belts. This one is my mother's, she got it in Santa Fe twenty years ago. These pics were taken on the ride back to Dallas yesterday morning! We drove nine hours and were still in the same state…wow!

Wearing Anine Bing leather pants, vintage men's boots, vintage tee, vintage turquoise concho belt (similar here)

When we arrived in Big Springs, Texas, we had no idea that we were stopping in one of the creepiest towns in America. We spent the night there in the Hotel Settles on our way to Marfa. The hotel has been recently redone, and it is spectacularly beautiful. We enjoyed a nice dinner and spent a while in their Pharmacy bar, where we got to talk to some of the employees and the sheriff. They warned us of all the unsettled spirits that inhabit the hotel and recounted many of their own supernatural experiences! (Flickering lights, apparitions, exploding glasses!) Right after hearing all of this, I checked my instagram. My picture of the hotel lobby was flooded with comments of people claiming to see a 'skull' in the photo! How creepy is that?? Big Spring itself is a pretty spooky place. Paul Harvey has said, "If you want to commit murder and get away with it, go to Big Spring, TX.".

The bad juju in the place was undeniable. My mom and I both woke up at 3 AM, she had felt a huge gust of freezing air come over her and then suddenly there was this weirdly human-sounding tapping in our room. We both heard it! It was as if something was trying to get our attention.

Still, we loved Hotel Settles and want to return some day soon. The beautiful ballroom we shot in was my favorite part. We are now safely in Marfa and have been having the time of our lives. Cannot wait to share more!

Now I get to show off some of my own Red Valentino! I absolutely love this dress, it has a very Western saloon feel to it. Perfect for a Texas girl. The Rochas Victorian-style granny boots were made for it!

I love to pile on layers of black, since it is the color that goes with everything. I recently styled a look for Michael Stars wearing some of their new spring collection recently…here I am wearing a sleeveless muscle tank and shirred skirt by Michael Stars with a Richard Chai shearling aviator jacket and vintage mens ankle boots.
